What’s a guy gotta do to get an Oscar? Here’s some trivia about Sharma’s work on the film, from FirstPost.com.

Sharma beat out 4,000 other applicants (Ang Lee decided from the start the role would not be whitewashed.)

Sharma had never acted prior to this so Ang Lee assigned him a pile of homework and made him act scenes from Teneesse Williams and other playwrights just for practice.

Sharma didn’t know how to swim when he was cast for the role. When he first started out he could only hold his breath for 14 seconds. In the end he was able to go for one minute and a half.

Sharma spent most of the movie filming in a pool emoting in front of a blue screen to an invisible tiger.

Sharma lost 20% of his body weight for the role, eating a diet that mostly consisted of tuna fish, just like his character, so his ribs would show.

Sharma cut himself up frequently while working on the boat and used those injuries in his acting. He would allow himself to get flipped along with the boat.

The production was banned from speaking to Sharma. Ang Lee and Sharma agreed that he would not to talk to other people for almost two months so he would understand what isolation was like.

2. When white actors like Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio do stuff like lose 20% of their body weight or cut themselves and keep acting everyone cheers uproariously.

3. It is weirdly dismissive when films about characters of color get nominated but their actors do not. Django Unchained, Life of Pi, Slumdog Millionaire, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, The Last Emperor, etc.

4. As FirstPost points out, a lot of the Oscar snubbed actors that people are talking about like Leonardo DiCaprio have plenty of other opportunities to star in other big movies. When is the next big project for an actor of South Asian descent coming up?

Richard O’Brien: ‘I’m 70% man, 30% woman’

Richard O’Brien, writer of hit musical The Rocky Horror Show, delighted in shaking up the conservative sexual attitudes of the 1970s.

His most famous creation, Dr Frank N Furter, brought the house down with his song Sweet Transvestite.

But the show’s creator was ashamed about his own long-held desire to be more feminine.

For 50 years, O’Brien repressed the feeling. But “you can’t just put the lid on things and pretend that they don’t exist”, he says.

So a decade ago, he started taking the female hormone oestrogen - and is happy with the results.

“It takes the edge off the masculine, testosterone-driven side of me and I like that very much. I think I’ve become a nicer person in some ways, slightly softer. For the first time in my life, I’ve started to put on a little bit of weight, which I like.”

He has also developed small breasts. But O’Brien is not intending to go further and have sex reassignment surgery.

“I don’t want to pretend to be something that I’m not. Anton Rodgers, the actor, said ‘you’re the third sex’. And I thought that’s quite nice. I quite like that position.

“It’s my belief that we are on a continuum between male and female. There are people who are hardwired male and there are people who are hardwired female, but most of us are on that continuum and I believe myself probably to be about 70% male, 30% female.”

The other day I was going about my business when I happened to read this moronic article explaining how advocating ‘risk management’ (barf) is not ‘victim blaming’.

I’ve read a lot of articles like this, but that one, for some reason, was the straw that broke the camel’s back. I am absolutely sick to death of being told what to wear and what to do and how to be, as though any of that will somehow save me from being raped. It’s not a woman’s responsibility to prevent sexual assault. How about we teach men not to rape instead?

How about we recognise that being drunk, being ‘sexy’, being out having fun, being loud, being trans, being queer, being sexually active - none of it causes rape, because rapists cause rape?

How about we stop pretending that if women follow some stupid, byzantine set of ‘rules’ we’ll be safe?

But the real thing that gets me about these ‘safety tips’ is this:

THEY ALL ASSUME WOMEN ARE MORONS.

Every single article I read containing hot tips! on how to be safe reads like the author thinks women have never heard or thought about their personal safety before.

Fun fact: Women think about personal safety, like, all the time. We carry a spare pair of shoes. We don’t listen to music so we can listen out for people coming up behind us. We get a cab instead of walking, if we’re lucky enough to afford it (not that that’s exactly a safe option either).

We think and we watch and we listen because we know by being a woman we’re at risk. Every one of my female friends and I have our own list of things we do to be safe, a lot of stuff that has been conditioned in us since childhood and that we now do subconsciously, without thinking. Because we live in a rape culture.

SO STOP. Stop writing stupid, patronising bullshit articles telling us WHAT WE ALREADY KNOW.

Plus. Half your tips are fucking stupid anyway.

Picture this, one day you’re walking through some store. Lets call it Appropriation Outfitters and you, consumer come across two items that catch your fancy:

one is a pre-made chicken feather “100% authentic, blessed by a shaman, made in China Native American, Red Indian” headdress.

the other is a make your own headdress kit with primary coloured chicken feathers that are like totally 100% cruelty free and this appeals to your PETA sensibility.

Now you, consumer decided to purchase the pre-made headdress because well, making your own is time consuming and your purchasing needs, need to be as easy on you as possible, really, it’s not like you need to earn it or anything.

You walk your headdress home and your first instinct is, “OMG I MUST TAKE PICTURES!” so you take pictures in your backyard and you’re like, man these are hot I should put them on Tumblr and tag them with Native American because that’s totally what I am right now.

So, you walk you, your headdress and your Canon Rebel into your house in suburbia, Canadiamericanland and upload your photos first into photoshop to adjust the contrast, etc. then onto Tumblr.

Your friends from highschool LOVE THEM, they’re like “ZOMG Mary ur so hawt in these!” and you’re like “ZOMG Kathy, I know, I’m like a real Red Indian!”

Then you get a message that’s like, “bro, this is some serious White bullshit cut it out, and let me tell you as a Native person why this is bullshit.” When this happens there are two roads you can take, plus a hidden third option.

Road #1: Apologize. Listen, and learn something. Maybe realize those photos are offensive and maybe you don’t get it 100% but someone is saying it’s hurting them and maybe you are compassionate and you take down the photos and do some research. Maybe become an ally, maybe you don’t. But you realize you’ve done some wrong somewhere and you’re like “wow, guys, sorry lemme take those down.”

Road #2: Defend yourself. How is this wrong! It can’t be wrong! You are a FREE Canadamrican and under the Charter of Freedom Amendments you have your God granted right to wear whatever the fuck you want! You don’t care if some PoCs are angry! It’s a free country! You’re not racist, you’re not hurting anyone. Fuck the haters, take more photos go back to Appropriation Outfitters and buy more so all your friends can become ‘Indians’ over night.

Hidden third option: In this option, you create a Tumblr devoted to defending your right to wear a headdress and everyone hates you and your hamster spontaneously dies. I asked my spirit animal and he said that the punishment for taking hidden option #3 is spontaneous hamster death of the perpetrator’s hamster.

Lets say, you, consumer decide to take option #2. And you’re getting a lot of hate for it and you’re getting angry because all these people are harshing your mellow or some shit and you don’t get why. What do the mean by “white privilege? I really like the way this is phrased. It’s so easy for people to dismiss “rape jokes” when they’re referred to as “rape jokes” because it makes rape sound like nothing more than a subject, like there aren’t even any people involved.

“Joke about raping someone” sounds so much more accurate to what people do when they make a “rape joke.” You’re not just joking about some sort of comedic subject. You are joking about one of the most horrific experiences that can happen to someone.

When I began my nursing career in the 1950s in Quebec, contraception was illegal and women had no say over family planning. They had no choice, and some faced desperation.

I saw women come to the hospital, bleeding and in pain, only to discover they’d tried to end their pregnancy themselves.

As a nurse, and later as an MP and Senator, I took part in the hard-fought battles to institutionalize and enshrine the right to choose in Canadian law.

And in 1988 the debate was settled when the Supreme Court ruled: “The decision whether or not to terminate a pregnancy is essentially a moral decision and in a free and democratic society, the conscience of the individual must be paramount to that of the state.”
